A member of a train's staff is in a life-threatening condition after being hailed as a hero for confronting a man during a mass stabbing on a UK train, an attack that left 11 people injured.
The incident, which Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called "appalling," unfolded on the 18:25 LNER service from Doncaster to London King's Cross on Saturday night.
British Transport Police (BTP) stated that the sole suspect, a 32-year-old man from Peterborough, boarded the train there and began his attack as the train moved south. Terrified passengers ran through carriages, some bloodied, while others hid in toilets and the buffet car.
The train made an emergency, unscheduled stop at Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, at 19:39. Armed police boarded the train and arrested the suspect. A 35-year-old man also arrested at the scene has since been released with no further action.
Police have emphasized that "there is nothing to suggest this is a terrorist incident."
What Witnesses Saw
Passengers described scenes of chaos. Alistair Day, 58, told reporters he hid in the buffet car with 11 others as the attacker tried to get in. He helped a man who had been stabbed in the chest, using clothing to stanch the bleeding.
Olly Foster recalled hearing shouts of "run, there's a guy stabbing literally everyone" and seeing an older man with gashes to his head and neck who had reportedly "blocked" the attacker from stabbing a young girl.
Student Amira Ostalsk said she grabbed a metal tray to protect herself as she fled.
The Official Response
King Charles and Queen Camilla issued a statement saying they were "truly appalled and shocked" by the attack.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood praised the "extraordinary bravery" of passengers and staff. BTP Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy said the actions of the injured staff member were "nothing short of heroic and undoubtedly saved many people's lives."
Travel Disruption
The incident has caused major travel disruption. Huntingdon station remained closed on Sunday. LNER, Great Northern, and Thameslink services are all experiencing significant delays and cancellations. LNER has stated that tickets for Saturday and Sunday will be valid until Friday.
