Tributes Paid to Taylor Jenkins, 24, Killed in Fatal A19 Police Chase
A Tragic Loss on the A19 Tributes are pouring in for a "deeply loved" young woman who died in a head-on collision near Sunderland following a police pursuit.
Taylor Jenkins, 24, from Edinburgh, was a passenger in a white BMW M135 that was travelling south on the northbound carriageway of the A19 in the early hours of Sunday, March 1. Northumbria Police confirmed the BMW had failed to stop for officers earlier in Gateshead, prompting a pursuit that ended in a devastating crash with a grey Volkswagen Sharan minivan.
Tragically, Ms. Jenkins was pronounced dead at the scene.
Family Pays Tribute to a "Beautiful Spirit" In a heartfelt statement released through Northumbria Police, Taylor’s family requested privacy as they navigate their devastating loss.
"Taylor was deeply loved and will be missed more than words can ever express. Her kindness, laughter, and beautiful spirit touched so many lives, and her memory will live on in all of us. During this incredibly difficult time, we ask for privacy and compassion as we grieve."
The family also expressed immense gratitude for the overwhelming support and kindness they have received from the community.
Arrests and Ongoing Investigations
The fallout from the crash has resulted in criminal charges and multiple ongoing investigations:
The Driver Charged: Kane Farragher, 24, from Birkenhead, Merseyside, has appeared in court. He faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving, causing death by driving whilst disq
ualified, and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Other Casualties: A second male passenger in the BMW, in his 20s, remains hospitalized in a life-threatening condition. The driver of the VW Sharan received hospital treatment for injuries that were not deemed serious.
IOPC Probe: Because the crash occurred following a police pursuit, the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has launched an independent investigation into the circumstances.
Police Appeal for Witnesses Sergeant Greg Huntley of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit echoed the family’s plea for privacy. He also issued a stark warning to the public, urging them to avoid online speculation that could jeopardize the ongoing court proceedings.
Authorities are asking any further witnesses, or anyone with relevant dashcam footage of the incident, to contact Northumbria Police.
